Your first AI conversation

5 minutes. One real task. No fluff.

This isn't a tutorial where I walk you through menus and buttons. You're smart enough to figure out an interface. What I want to do instead is give you a real first experience with AI that actually shows you what the fuss is about.

Five minutes. One conversation. You'll either walk away thinking "okay, I see it now" or you won't. But you'll know.

Let's go.

Go to claude.ai. Create a free account if you don't have one. It takes about 30 seconds (email, verify, done).

If you already have a ChatGPT account and want to use that instead, that works too. Everything in this guide applies to any AI tool. I use Claude because I think it produces the best results for the kind of work I do, but the principles are identical.

Here's what NOT to type: "Hello." "What can you do?" "Tell me a joke."

These are fine but they teach you nothing. They're the equivalent of test-driving a Ferrari in a parking lot. Let's get on the road.

Step 4: Try the one thing that changes everything

Now that you've had a basic conversation, try this. It takes 60 seconds and it will change how you think about AI.

"Before we continue, I want to give you more context about me. I'm [your job title/role]. I work in [your industry]. My typical audience/clients are [who you serve]. My communication style is [how you'd describe it in a few words]. When I write or present, I value [what matters to you: clarity? warmth? directness? data?]. Keep all of this in mind for the rest of our conversation."

Now ask it the same thing you asked before. Or ask it something new.

Notice the difference. The output is more specific. More relevant. More... you. That's because you gave AI context about who you are, and context is everything.

This is the entire premise of what I teach. The quality of what you get from AI is directly proportional to the context you give it. Not word count. Not clever prompting tricks. Context.

What just happened

In about 5 minutes, you just:

Had a real conversation with AI about real work
Experienced the difference between a first draft and a shaped result
Saw how context transforms output quality

That's the foundation. Everything else builds on this.

But here's the honest truth: what you just did is the equivalent of cooking one meal in a professional kitchen. You used the stove, you made something, it tasted fine. But you haven't set up your station. You don't have your mise en place. You're improvising every dish from scratch.

Where to go from here

One more thing

The people who get the most from AI treat it like a thinking partner instead of a search engine. You just had your first real conversation with a thinking partner. The quality of that partnership only goes up from here.

Every Wednesday, I send a free newsletter where I build AI systems live and teach people how to think with AI, not just use it. If what you just experienced made you curious about what's possible, the newsletter is where the building happens.
